Bank of America chief to make $5bn cuts in bid to reverse company's slide

Brian Moynihan to oversee company overhaul known as Project New BAC, which could lead to the loss of 40,000 US jobs

Bank of America's boss faced his sceptics in New York on Monday morning and promised another $5bn of cuts as he fights to halt the precipitous slide in the fortunes of the US's largest bank.

Brian Moynihan has faced fierce criticism from investors as the financial giant's share price has collapsed. Moynihan is overseeing a restructuring of the bank that could lead to the loss of 30,000 to 40,000 jobs, and is likely to end Bank of America's reign as the largest US bank by assets.

"We don't have to be the biggest company out there: we have to be the best," Moynihan told the audience at the Barclays 2011 Global Financial Services Conference.

Bank of America's shares have halved since the start of the year, dragged down by the faltering economy and a wave of litigation over the bank's involvement in sub-prime mortgages. The cuts are the first phase of an overhaul known as Project New BAC, and will be finalised by the end of 2013.

"We can get out of things we don't need to do, [to] make the company leaner, more straightforward, more driven," Moynihan said.

Last month Warren Buffett pumped $5bn into Bank of America, a vote of confidence from the world's most respected investor that initially drove up the bank's shares. Buffett made a similar investment in Goldman Sachs at the height of the credit crisis that generated a huge payday for shareholders in his Berkshire Hathaway investment fund.

Bank of America's share price rose sharply on the news of Buffett's bet, but the company has since lost all that gain. Moynihan told the New York conference he was "very pleased" with the investment, which has been criticised by analysts as too favourable for Buffett.

Moynihan said the bank faces three key issues. He said it was being held back by slow growth in the US economy, by its disastrous purchase of sub-prime home loan giant Countrywide in 2008, and by regulatory changes that will force banks to keep aside more money for a rainy day.

Last quarter, Bank of America reported an $8.8bn loss, owing in large part to a settlement with mortgage investors related to Countrywide.

Asked whether he consider filing bankruptcy for Countrywide, Moynihan said the bank "looks at all our options on everything."

Windows 8 Tablet Builds to Reach Developers Soon

Windows 8 tablet builds are rumored to be coming to developers as soon as this fall, so within the next 2-3 months, maybe even sooner. This means that a Windows 8 build is close to finish and Microsoft can expect to make a Windows 8 shipment sometime next summer in 2012.

There is also a Microsoft Build event on September 13-16. The Anaheim California conference is focused on Windows hardware and software developers. Supposedly, it is expected to be Microsoft’s Windows 8 coming out party to get partners and OEM’s started on developing devices and apps for Windows 8.

The Quad Core Processor

The question comes up is what is the Quad Core processor that is supposed to run on tablets? That isn’t clear and running the tablet with a laptop processor wouldn’t be a good move since the battery life would be limited.

Note, however, earlier this year three developers NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments each announced quad-core mobile chips and announced that they’d arrive before the end of 2011. Nvidia is supposed to make an announcement soon about the state of a quad-core table sometime in August or early September. Nvidia, by the way, is an ARM chipmaker, which is the preferred Windows 8 OS chip of choice, (although x86 based chips will still be used).

A big thing for tablets is performance, and ARM will provide fast operations, making the tablet a different computing experience than currently exists. Microsoft is expecting that this cutting edge technology may be what finally separates the Microsoft tablet from the iPad.

Is Performance Enough?

Having said that, the issue for the tablet is not just performance but design. Apple junkies love the design, the apps, and the uniqueness of the product. It stands apart. While Microsoft may be able to make a competent and reliable product, can they make one that consumers will fall in love with?

5 Reasons webOS Fail at Market

CALIFORNIA - Hewlett Packrad (HP) has just kicked webOS as part of its mobile operating system platform future. This surprised many, including analysts.

Many of the analysts who try to guess why the HP to be willing to lose substantial funding for webOS disable it. Here are 5 reasons why webOS wrong strategy in the market.

1. HP misjudged Apple
HP failed to realize that the popularity of Apple in the mobile space will not slow down any time soon. The company seems to believe that after iPad 2 was launched on store shelves for a while and the iPhone 5 continues to be delayed, they can take advantage of potential buyers of Apple patience. But that never happened. Conversely, those people just bought an Apple product, the HP actually disappeared.

2. webOS not support Android applications
One of the biggest mistakes made HP is webOS not accept Android. Like it or not, in the mobile market today, Android is the operating system that each vendor (except for Apple and Microsoft) should be used. This is a mobile OS that people know and trust, and have proven to sell quite well in the mobile space. To WebOS is a mistake.

3. WebOS unattractive
WebOS itself is not all that interesting. The operating system does not have enough third-party applications to attract consumers, and functions just too different from the IOS and Android for customers to give a second look. Moreover, the operating system is not really known outside technological circles, put in a disadvantage from the start.

4. TouchPad is a mistake
TouchPad Tablet HP is a mistake from the beginning. As mentioned, he walked WebOS, which is already included in the loss. Combine that with the fact that HP makes the device look very like the iPad complete with a similar design, the price is identical and the same screen size, and it quickly became clear that not having many other advantages.

5. Smartphone is boring
Let's face it: HP's smartphone lineup just is not all that interesting. Palm Pre that both consumers and corporate users even care. Moreover, they display a small display, a design that looks a bit derivative of other vendors' previous older models.

Price Not Always Reflect Value

ORDER financially savvy, I say you should be able to distinguish between value and price. This is the basic principle of investing.

My simple definition for both, the value is what we get and the price is what we pay. The difficulty is the price in front of our eyes, while the value is unobservable. In many instances, the price of an asset reflects its value. In investing, we want to find any assets whose value is above the price.

Investors believe that in the long run prices will converge towards its value. However, in the short-term rates are not uncommon on the value or vice versa. Price is the consensus of market participants regarding the value of an asset at a specified time. Because the affected market sentiment, investors may be too pessimistic or too optimistic.

As a result, they can be wrong in assessing the assets and asset prices also deviate from its value so it does not reflect its value. Not unlike the investment, when they want to buy goods and services, we also weigh the value and price. We will be willing to buy something if its value is greater than the price or have a high value for money and avoid items whose value is below the price.

Interestingly, the value of goods and services to a person is a relative and subjective, depending on purchasing power, hobbies, and lifestyle. Eating in fancy restaurants or in five-star hotels cost hundreds of thousands of dollars per person is worth according to some people but not for me.

Conversely, family travel abroad once or twice a year to give sufficient value for my money, although the fees paid not less. But, I do not get the same value for money from the executive-class plane ticket or a luxury car. On the other hand, prices are set by the company or the seller was not always reflect the value or cost of production.

There is a basket of goods and services whose price is set to follow demand. Products that enter this group are products that have differentiation with little or no substitution.

An example is the cost of toll roads. If overseas toll charges have never climbed or even lowered, here it dinaikkan.Untuk toll charges attract new investors and because of the high demand, we increased toll fees every two years to reflect inflation. Another extreme example, we also see many products that cost several times the cost of production.

High-tech products and new drugs that no rival in the category ini.Yang also enter this group is branded.Jika product you buy Hermes handbags and Lamborghini cars for instance, the price you pay to buy the most prestige.

This product is intentionally high priced above cost affordable to only a handful of consumers have for their identity as a group of the few people who haves. Because making money is not as easy for me as a big businessman, I know myself to avoid these branded products.

Extravagant Also Good

If your economy is also not yet signed the group up, you should agree with me about the value of super-expensive products. However, we must thank the groups who are willing to collect for the products. Because of them, upscale shopping malls like Plaza Indonesia, Plaza Senayan and Pondok Indah Mall 2 can continue to survive.

Without rich people are wasteful, malls are also highly likely to go down a class. To be able to spin faster and create many new jobs, the economy needs rich people are generous in spending money.

Communities are rarely able to eat outside, rarely recreation, and only occasionally shop at the mall to make the economy slow flow. In essence, for a capable, efficient and economical it is not good for the economy, although it might be good for families mereka.Kondisi is known as the paradox of Thrifty.

Beautiful Differences

This is the beauty of life kita.Yang no less beautiful is the difference in the lives of wealthy ini.Yang should thank fate for the poor and disadvantaged.

Because so many low-income people, those who earn twenty million dollars or more per month can be a nickname here is rich and can afford to hire maids and chauffeurs. Imagine what happens when almost everyone in this country as rich as in developed countries.

In line with this, the intelligent and educated people should not be arrogant to the ignorant or uneducated. Because many of the less intelligent, they are called smart or well educated so it is worth getting a respectable position in a company with huge salaries.

Those who have jobs still have to appreciate the dozens to tens of millions of people in this country who are less fortunate because they do not earn tetap.Karenanya, they must create their own jobs in order to stay alive as trading stalls, open a shop at home, and others.

The absence of unemployment benefits or social assistance to the tunakarya making them unable to "idle". Only rich people who are having a lot of assets / savings or have parents and relatives who are willing to be boarded capable of unemployed in our country. Unemployed is something that is "expensive".

Likewise, those who are blessed with a handsome face and cantik.Mereka must respect those who are less attractive in appearance or mediocre. The majority should not look down there minoritas.Karena minority, the majority group has the confidence and greater bargaining power.

6 Surprising Facts About Steve Jobs & Apple

It's safe to say most investors are well acquainted with the charisma, drive, and brilliance of Steve Jobs. He's the most well-known CEO in the world, and arguably the best too. His announced resignation as Apple CEO is not unexpected, but is still being met with some degree of shock. Here's a short list of facts (not opinions) about Jobs and Apple that are truly surprising.
1) Not A Single Downgrade Today
Jobs' resignation is arguably the worst news out of Apple (AAPL) in years and the Wall Street crowd didn't even blink. 49 out of 51 analysts currently rate Apple a "BUY" with an average price target of $497 a share (according to Factset Data), which is roughly 32% above yesterday's closing price. The Jobs shocker was met not with a flurry of downgrades and panic selling, but rather with a chorus of reiterations and calls to buy on any weakness.
2) Jobs' Stake in Disney Is Twice As Big As His Slice of Apple
As a result of his Pixar sale, Steve Jobs owns 7.4% of Disney (DIS), or 138 million shares, worth roughly $4.5 billion. At the same time, his latest disclosed stake in Apple of 5.5 million shares, represents roughly 0.5% of the total float and is worth about $2.1 billion. His stake in Apple doesn't even make him a top 20 shareholder. In Disney, Jobs' is the top shareholder. His stake is way above Fidelity, Blackrock, State Street, and Vanguard which own chunks ranging from 3 to 4.5%.
3) Apple Gets Sued Almost Every Day

When you have grown to $350 billion in market value with a massive global reach, it is safe to say that you are a large target with deep pockets. In just August alone, 13 lawsuits have been disclosed pertaining to privacy violations in South Korea, class action in the US, numerous patent challenges, as well as a claim of price fixing.

4) Apple Has Not Missed A Quarterly Estimate in Nearly 9 Years
According to Factset, Apple has "beat the street" for 35 consecutive quarters - the longest streak of any company in the S&P 500 except for Cognizant Technology (CTSH). And speaking of earnings, the $7.3 billion net income Apple reported in July made it the largest contributor to earnings growth in the S&P 500 for the 2nd quarter. With Apple, S&P 500 earnings were up 11.8% in Q2. Without it, S&P 499 earnings would have risen only 10.0%.
5) Apple Has Not Traded Under $100 a Share Since March 18, 2009
What's even more astounding is that on a split adjusted basis, (there have been 3) Apple's IPO price is $2.75 a share. For the record, the actual IPO was done on December 12, 1980 at $22.00 a share. If you bought 1,000 shares of the Apple IPO, your $22,000 investment would be worth $2.9 million today.
6) Steve Jobs Personally Holds Over 300 Patents
According to the New York Times, it's actually 313 patents. But what is more telling is the amount that some of his billionaire tech peers have: 9 for Bill Gates and about a dozen for Sergei Brin and Larry Page. Most of Jobs' patents are tech-related, but the Apple founder even holds a patent for a glass staircase.

10 Most-Complained-About Airlines

#10 Skywest Airlines

.77 complaints per 100,000 passengers

The largest independently owned regional airline boasts a low complaint rate even though it flew almost 12 million passengers over the first six months of 2011.

#9 Atlantic Southeast Airlines

.96 complaints per 100,000 passengers

Atlantic Southeast will merge with ExpressJet later this year. Ideally, the newly formed airline will have a Twitter presence, because this airline, which operates close to 1,000 flights every day in the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean, does not.

#8 ExpressJet Airlines

1.01 complaints per 100,000 passengers

Express Jet has slipped from a rate of .70 last year, and its Twitter presence is an anemic placeholder. Let’s hope that when it merges with Atlantic Southeast later this year, a more dynamic social media presence will be part of the business plan.

#7 JetBlue Airways

1.07 complaints per 100,000 passengers

When JetBlue got on the Twitter bandwagon in the spring of 2007—one of the first big brands to jump in—its business plan was that it wanted to help customers. And according to the DOT, there are enough complaints to keep its customer-service folks busy.

#6 Delta Airlines

1.27 complaints per 100,000 passengers

Hands down, Delta holds the title of most improved. A year ago, it was ranked the worst airline for complaints in virtually every category. Now that the bumpy merger with Northwest has emerged from the turbulence, Delta has cut its complaint rate nearly in half.

#5 American Airlines

1.50 complaints per 100,000 passengers

American logged 636 complaints from January to June, 2011. With nearly a quarter of a million Twitter followers, though, the airline has upped its game to try and handle problems before they become complaints.

#4 American Eagle Airlines

1.67 complaints per 100,000 passengers

The country’s largest regional carrier reported the highest rates of flight cancellations and mishandled baggage in June, 2011, which certainly played a part in its shocking jump from a respectable complaint rate of .87 over the same period in 2010 to a whopping 1.67 this year.

#3 Continental Airlines

1.70 complaints per 100,000 passengers

Flight problems and customer service issues are the bane of Continental, and its complaint rate edged up from 2010.

#2 US Airways

1.73 complaints per 100,000 passengers

Flight issues and customer service remain major problems for this carrier. It’s routinely at the top of the barrel when it comes to complaints, despite the fact that it carries less than half the passengers that Southwest does.

#1 United Airlines

2.01 complaints per 100,000 passengers

United didn’t fare well last year either—coming in at No. 2—but this year it grabs the title of worst airline for passenger complaints.

People put an ad: "TV Sale 29 inch". Or like this ad: "TV 29 inch, with a subwoofer, 3800 PMPO stereo, surround sound, extreme flat, front audio and video?"
Furthermore we can also explain the details of the advantages (benefits). For example: AC Sharp Plasmacluster removing positive ions and negative ions, kills viruses and bacteria up to 99.9 percent in less than an hour. Surely people will be more interested to buy (at least be a consideration for purchase) with detail information such benefits.
Therefore, you must also apply the practice to always explain the benefits of the product, manufacturing process, detail the benefits your product / service to your target market, so I can help improve your marketing. Congratulations and best practices awesome.

Why are Chinese big banks so profitable?

At a time big US and European banks are striving to survive, big Chinese banks are thriving. According to Xinhua Agency, ten Chinese commercial banks reported net earnings of 244.7 billion yuan (72.11 billion U.S. dollars), beating analysts’ estimates—most banks saw year-on-year rises of over 30 percent in their first-half net profits. What makes Chinese banks so profitable?

Seigniorage income; the creation of money to accommodate the growing demand for loans by State Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Town Village Enterprises (TVEs), and local governments. High savings (sometimes mandatory), interest rate controls, and high economic growth let Chinese banks enjoy a steady interest rate spread and a larger loan volume. As I explain in my co-authored book, the rise and fall of Abacus Banking in Japan and China, the problem is that Chinese banks aren’t true banks, and SOEs and TVEs aren’t true enterprises either. They are all “units” within China’s governmentally owned and controlled sectors. So it isn’t clear whether these loans are true loans or inter-governmental money transfers.

In a sense, China’s banking system is similar to the Japanese banking system during the country’s high growth era, though Japanese banks weren’t governmentally owned. But they, too, enjoyed seigniorage income that let them profit from a tightly controlled interest rate and high economic growth environment. But as interest rate controls were lifted during the country’s financial Big Bang, and as economic growth slow-down, the profitability of Japanese banks disappeared and many of their assets declined in value. Would the same happen to China?
