Bank of America chief to make $5bn cuts in bid to reverse company's slide

Brian Moynihan to oversee company overhaul known as Project New BAC, which could lead to the loss of 40,000 US jobs

Bank of America's boss faced his sceptics in New York on Monday morning and promised another $5bn of cuts as he fights to halt the precipitous slide in the fortunes of the US's largest bank.

Brian Moynihan has faced fierce criticism from investors as the financial giant's share price has collapsed. Moynihan is overseeing a restructuring of the bank that could lead to the loss of 30,000 to 40,000 jobs, and is likely to end Bank of America's reign as the largest US bank by assets.

"We don't have to be the biggest company out there: we have to be the best," Moynihan told the audience at the Barclays 2011 Global Financial Services Conference.

Bank of America's shares have halved since the start of the year, dragged down by the faltering economy and a wave of litigation over the bank's involvement in sub-prime mortgages. The cuts are the first phase of an overhaul known as Project New BAC, and will be finalised by the end of 2013.

"We can get out of things we don't need to do, [to] make the company leaner, more straightforward, more driven," Moynihan said.

Last month Warren Buffett pumped $5bn into Bank of America, a vote of confidence from the world's most respected investor that initially drove up the bank's shares. Buffett made a similar investment in Goldman Sachs at the height of the credit crisis that generated a huge payday for shareholders in his Berkshire Hathaway investment fund.

Bank of America's share price rose sharply on the news of Buffett's bet, but the company has since lost all that gain. Moynihan told the New York conference he was "very pleased" with the investment, which has been criticised by analysts as too favourable for Buffett.

Moynihan said the bank faces three key issues. He said it was being held back by slow growth in the US economy, by its disastrous purchase of sub-prime home loan giant Countrywide in 2008, and by regulatory changes that will force banks to keep aside more money for a rainy day.

Last quarter, Bank of America reported an $8.8bn loss, owing in large part to a settlement with mortgage investors related to Countrywide.

Asked whether he consider filing bankruptcy for Countrywide, Moynihan said the bank "looks at all our options on everything."

HOW OLD ARE THE COMPETITIONS? 
The Miss Universe and Miss USA competitions began as concurrent events in 1952 in Long Beach, California. Miss Teen USA made its debut in 1983 in Lakeland, Florida.

ARE THESE COMPETITIONS SEPARATE FROM THE MISS AMERICA PAGEANT?

ARE CONTESTANTS REQUIRED TO HAVE A COACH?

Generally, state and national directors provide contestants with the confidence and experience needed to compete.

CAN CONTESTANTS BE MARRIED?
No, contestants may not be married or pregnant. They must not have ever been married, not had a marriage annulled nor given birth to, or parented, a child. The titleholders are also required to remain single throughout their reign.

HOW DO CONTESTANTS GET TO THE NATIONAL COMPETITION?
For Miss USA and Miss Teen USA some cities and all states have preliminary competitions, which are produced by local and state directors. The winner of the city competition goes on to compete in the state event for her home city; state winners go on to the national competition. Windows 8 Tablet Builds to Reach Developers Soon

Windows 8 tablet builds are rumored to be coming to developers as soon as this fall, so within the next 2-3 months, maybe even sooner. This means that a Windows 8 build is close to finish and Microsoft can expect to make a Windows 8 shipment sometime next summer in 2012.

There is also a Microsoft Build event on September 13-16. The Anaheim California conference is focused on Windows hardware and software developers. Supposedly, it is expected to be Microsoft’s Windows 8 coming out party to get partners and OEM’s started on developing devices and apps for Windows 8.

The Quad Core Processor

The question comes up is what is the Quad Core processor that is supposed to run on tablets? That isn’t clear and running the tablet with a laptop processor wouldn’t be a good move since the battery life would be limited.

Note, however, earlier this year three developers NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments each announced quad-core mobile chips and announced that they’d arrive before the end of 2011. Nvidia is supposed to make an announcement soon about the state of a quad-core table sometime in August or early September. Nvidia, by the way, is an ARM chipmaker, which is the preferred Windows 8 OS chip of choice, (although x86 based chips will still be used).

A big thing for tablets is performance, and ARM will provide fast operations, making the tablet a different computing experience than currently exists. Microsoft is expecting that this cutting edge technology may be what finally separates the Microsoft tablet from the iPad.

Is Performance Enough?

Having said that, the issue for the tablet is not just performance but design. Apple junkies love the design, the apps, and the uniqueness of the product. It stands apart. While Microsoft may be able to make a competent and reliable product, can they make one that consumers will fall in love with?

My simple definition for both, the value is what we get and the price is what we pay. The difficulty is the price in front of our eyes, while the value is unobservable. In many instances, the price of an asset reflects its value. In investing, we want to find any assets whose value is above the price.

Investors believe that in the long run prices will converge towards its value. However, in the short-term rates are not uncommon on the value or vice versa. Price is the consensus of market participants regarding the value of an asset at a specified time. Because the affected market sentiment, investors may be too pessimistic or too optimistic.

As a result, they can be wrong in assessing the assets and asset prices also deviate from its value so it does not reflect its value. Not unlike the investment, when they want to buy goods and services, we also weigh the value and price. We will be willing to buy something if its value is greater than the price or have a high value for money and avoid items whose value is below the price.

His stake in Apple doesn't even make him a top 20 shareholder. In Disney, Jobs' is the top shareholder. Why are Chinese big banks so profitable?

At a time big US and European banks are striving to survive, big Chinese banks are thriving. According to Xinhua Agency, ten Chinese commercial banks reported net earnings of 244.7 billion yuan (72.11 billion U.S. dollars), beating analysts’ estimates—most banks saw year-on-year rises of over 30 percent in their first-half net profits. What makes Chinese banks so profitable?

Seigniorage income; the creation of money to accommodate the growing demand for loans by State Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Town Village Enterprises (TVEs), and local governments. High savings (sometimes mandatory), interest rate controls, and high economic growth let Chinese banks enjoy a steady interest rate spread and a larger loan volume. As I explain in my co-authored book, the rise and fall of Abacus Banking in Japan and China, the problem is that Chinese banks aren’t true banks, and SOEs and TVEs aren’t true enterprises either. They are all “units” within China’s governmentally owned and controlled sectors. So it isn’t clear whether these loans are true loans or inter-governmental money transfers.

In a sense, China’s banking system is similar to the Japanese banking system during the country’s high growth era, though Japanese banks weren’t governmentally owned. But they, too, enjoyed seigniorage income that let them profit from a tightly controlled interest rate and high economic growth environment. But as interest rate controls were lifted during the country’s financial Big Bang, and as economic growth slow-down, the profitability of Japanese banks disappeared and many of their assets declined in value. Would the same happen to China?
